What is urology?

Although there is no minimum age to start seeing this specialist, it is recommended that, at the latest, the first visit be made between the ages of 40 and 50. After the age of 50, it is essential to have a urological check-up once a year. And, before the age of 50, it is advisable to consult a urologist if you have a family history of prostate cancer, or if you have symptoms such as intense pain and stinging when urinating, acute and incapacitating pain, which goes from the kidney area to the groin, fever, malaise and chills as a result of a urogenital infection.

Prostate cancer is a silent disease, it can grow slowly and cause no symptoms; therefore, regular check-ups with a urologist are very important to detect it in early stages. When prostate cancer produces symptoms it is usually because it is already in an advanced stage. The most common symptoms are: slow or weakened urinary flow or the need to urinate more frequently, especially at night, blood in the urine or semen, fever, pain in the lower back, in the groin area or at the tip of the penis, among other signs.
