  • The “display screen syndrome”; which is the continuous and massive use of screens and cell phones, produces a decrease in the blinking rate of the eye, causing “functional” dryness and in some cases that visual health is affected.

Definition and Causes

When the eye is not well hydrated we can develop dry eye. Dry eye is an ophthalmological disorder that consists of a shortage of tear quantity and/or deterioration of tear quality.

It is estimated to affect 30% of the Spanish adult population, and is more common in older people and women.

It can be caused by excessive use of electronic screens, hormonal alterations, factors such as environmental dryness and exposure to heat/heating or air conditioning.

Symptoms

Tears not only shield the eye from dirt and infections, they also help focus light. If the eye is not hydrated, it can cause discomfort and interfere with the visual quality and quality of life of the sufferer.

The most common symptoms of dry eye include:

  • Burning or stinging sensation.
  • Foreign body, “gritty” sensation.
  • Sensation of dryness of the eye.
  • Blurred vision that improves with blinking.
  • Fluctuation of visual acuity.

These symptoms cause discomfort and make it difficult to perform activities that require attention, and may intensify in closed and dry environments.

Diagnosis

To diagnose dry eye it is necessary to perform a complete ophthalmological study to evaluate the ocular surface (cornea, conjunctive and eyelids), the inflammation and, in case of suffering from it, to know what type it is. Once the results are obtained, the ophthalmology specialist will be able to guide the patient towards one treatment or another.

Prevention

To prevent dry eye, and to maintain good eye health in general, it is essential to maintain good hydration. It is important to take preventive measures such as avoiding the excessive use of contact lenses, limiting the time spent using electronic screens, blinking frequently while using them and resting every hour.

In case of any eye discomfort, it is always advisable to visit an ophthalmologist, since vision plays a fundamental role in our daily life. CreuBlanca’s specialists in Ophthalmology will evaluate your case and, after reaching a diagnosis, they will prescribe a personalized treatment for you.
