In high-performance sport, diagnostic time is a key factor. A precise and rapid medical decision can determine the time needed to return to competition. In this context, the collaboration between CreuBlanca and the FC Barcelona Medical Services , launched in 2024, has gained relevance.

This strategic alliance establishes a working model in which CreuBlanca’s expertise in diagnostic imaging is directly integrated into the club’s clinical decision-making. This integration makes it possible to improve diagnostic accuracy, plan recovery processes and advance sports medicine based on scientific evidence.

Applied clinical research: turning medical imaging into knowledge

One of the main challenges in high-performance sports medicine is to increase diagnostic accuracy in muscle, joint and bone injuries, as well as to carry out more thorough and individualised monitoring of each athlete’s progress in order to optimise recovery times.

For this reason, in recent years, radiological information has been fully incorporated as a necessary and strategic tool in clinical decision-making in elite sport.

Within this framework, it is well known, for example, that the current demands of high-performance sport have led to a worrying increase and complexity in the prevalence of muscle injuries worldwide.

For this reason, the collaboration between CreuBlanca and the FC Barcelona Medical Services turns daily clinical practice into a source of continuous learning, generating clinical knowledge applicable to other athletes and sports clubs.

The added value of FC Barcelona as one of the few and most decorated elite multi-sport clubs, together with the proven experience of CreuBlanca, creates an exceptional scenario to systematically analyse a large volume of imaging tests performed daily, in order to continuously improve diagnostic protocols, the precision of therapeutic decision-making and the development of research projects together with the Barça Innovation Hub.

Research lines that make the difference

As a result of this collaboration, several research lines focused on diagnostic imaging in high-performance sport have been promoted through different studies that have already been published in prestigious international scientific journals.

Some of the most notable investigations include:

  • Muscle healing in sports injuries: MRI-based studies analysing muscle recovery processes and proposing classifications based on accumulated clinical experience. These results contribute to improving decision-making in critical phases of recovery.
  • Prediction of return to competition: research aimed at identifying, through imaging tests, indicators that can anticipate the risk of relapse. This information complements clinical evaluation and facilitates decision-making regarding return to competition.
  • Anatomical variability of the soleus muscle: studies focused on the anatomy of the soleus and its relationship with injury prognosis. This research provides evidence of its role in common injuries in professional football.

Innovation and the future of sports medicine

The collaboration between CreuBlanca and FC Barcelona reflects a shared vision of sports medicine based on innovation, specialisation and multidisciplinary work.

This project makes it possible to transform clinical information into applicable knowledge, with an impact on the quality of medical care and athlete monitoring.

Through this initiative, CreuBlanca reinforces its commitment to advancing sports medicine, promoting research, incorporating advanced technology and collaborating with internationally recognised institutions.
