Bunions, or hallux valgus, are the most common foot deformity and affect around 20% of the adult population in Spain.
Hallux valgus is a deviation of the big toe towards the other toes, creating an abnormal angle at the joint. It can lead to discomfort when walking, difficulty wearing shoes, and even persistent pain if not properly treated.
This is a multifactorial condition. While this type of foot issue can be hereditary, bunions are most commonly associated with older women, particularly those who frequently wear improper footwear, such as high heels or narrow-toed shoes. It can also be linked to biomechanical abnormalities of the foot, like flat feet or overly high arches, and even to rheumatic diseases such as arthritis.
In this video, Dr. Lucar, traumatologist at CreuBlanca and specialist in foot and ankle conditions, explains everything you need to know about bunions: why they appear, how they are diagnosed, what treatment options are available, and when it might be necessary to consider surgery.
