The Expert's Voice

Low back pain, also known as lumbar pain, is one of the most common conditions among the adult population. Although it can be recurrent, we should not resign ourselves to living with pain. Debunking the myths surrounding low back pain is key to preventing it from becoming chronic and to improving quality of life.

In this article, Dr. Edna Navas Araque, a specialist at the Pain Clinic of CreuBlanca, clarifies some of the most widespread beliefs about low back pain and its treatment.

MYTH 1: “If your back hurts a lot, it must be something serious.”

Pain in the lower back can be worrisome, but in most cases it is not related to serious medical conditions. The most common causes include muscle strains, poor posture, or stress. With proper care and controlled physical activity, the pain usually subsides without complications.

MYTH 2: “The older you get, the more your lower back hurts.”

Aging is often associated with increased lumbar pain, but this is not always the case. Maintaining an active lifestyle and following appropriate treatment helps improve mobility and reduce pain, regardless of age.

MYTH 3: “Maintaining good posture is enough to prevent pain.”

Although good posture helps, it is not enough to prevent low back pain. What really matters is avoiding staying in the same position for extended periods. Frequently changing posture and doing regular stretches is essential for maintaining a healthy back.

MYTH 4: “Exercising only makes low back pain worse.”

One of the most harmful myths. Unless otherwise advised by a medical professional, staying active is one of the best ways to relieve and prevent low back pain. Activities such as walking, swimming, or guided exercises can be very beneficial.

MYTH 5: “We can only know the diagnosis with an imaging test.”

While imaging tests can be useful in some cases, a detailed clinical assessment is usually sufficient to diagnose low back pain. MRIs or X-rays are only recommended when there are specific suspicions.

MYTH 6: “Only surgery can get rid of back pain.”

Surgery is neither the only nor the first option. In most cases, physical therapy, therapeutic exercise, and lifestyle changes are effective and far less invasive.

MYTH 7: “Using your back to lift things worsens injuries.”

The issue is not the effort itself, but how it is performed. With proper technique and progressive muscle strengthening, it is possible to lift weights without harming your back.

How can low back pain be prevented?

  • Maintain a routine of adapted physical exercise.

  • Avoid prolonged sedentary behavior.

  • Learn how to lift and move loads properly.

  • Prioritize quality sleep and stress management.

  • See a specialist at the first signs of discomfort.

It is important to stay well informed and, in case of any discomfort, to trust the judgment of healthcare professionals. At the Pain Clinic of CreuBlanca, we combine imaging diagnosis, clinical expertise, and advanced techniques to help you regain your quality of life and avoid unnecessary relapses.
