The skin is the largest organ of the human body and one of our main protective barriers against the environment. But at the same time, it is also one of the most vulnerable.

Although sun exposure can have health benefits, prolonged and unprotected exposure can cause silent skin damage. Sunburn is the most obvious sign, but not the only one. Behind temporary redness, there may be long-term cumulative effects: from sunspots and premature aging to a higher risk of developing skin cancer.

That’s why protecting the skin from ultraviolet (UV) radiation is not just a cosmetic issue, but a matter of health. Below, we share some key points to take care of your skin’s health.

  • Did you know your skin doesn’t “forget” a sunburn?

Every time we get sunburned, our skin cells suffer solar damage that doesn’t go away, but accumulates over time. Repeated sunburns significantly increase the risk of developing skin cancer. They also contribute to the appearance of sunspots, loss of elasticity and premature skin aging.

  • Did you know… clouds don’t block UV rays?

Even if the day is cloudy or overcast, ultraviolet rays still penetrate through the clouds. In fact, up to 80% of UV radiation can reach us even without direct sunlight. That’s why it’s important to apply broad-spectrum sunscreen every day, regardless of the weather.

  • Did you know your eyes can also suffer from sunburn?

We usually associate sun damage with the skin only, but prolonged sun exposure can also harm the eyes. UV radiation can affect the cornea and cause irritation, light sensitivity or even more serious injuries. Wearing sunglasses with UV protection is essential.

  • Did you know sunburn accelerates skin aging?

Continuous sun exposure without protection weakens collagen and elastin, causing wrinkles, loss of firmness, and sunspots. Well-cared-for skin stays younger for longer thanks to proper photoprotection.

  • Did you know the number on sunscreen doesn’t indicate its strength, but the duration of protection?

The SPF (Sun Protection Factor) number doesn’t mean SPF 50 is more effective than SPF 30, but rather how long you can stay in the sun without burning compared to no protection. For example, if your skin reddens after 10 minutes without protection, SPF 30 would theoretically protect you for 300 minutes (10 x 30). That’s only if you apply the correct amount and reapply sunscreen every 2 hours, especially after swimming or sweating.

  • Did you know sunscreen should be part of your daily routine?

Taking care of your skin shouldn’t be a one-off. Protection should be part of your daily habits, even in winter. Even if we don’t feel heat, radiation is still present. Daily photoprotection, skin hydration, and a good facial care routine help prevent future sun damage.

What to do if you already have a sunburn?

  • Rehydrate, both inside and out. Drink plenty of water and keep your skin moisturized.
  • Apply soothing creams with ingredients such as aloe vera, panthenol or calendula to relieve pain and promote skin regeneration.

  • Avoid sun exposure in the following days.

  • Cool the skin with lukewarm showers or baths (avoid very cold or very hot water).

Sun protection is the best way to prevent sunburn. Adopting healthy habits and protecting yourself properly is key, especially during the months we spend more time outdoors.
